Giving back to the community

It has always been important to me to give back to the community where possible, but I’d always been unsure as to how I could contribute. Everyone has their own set of unique skills, so I dug deeper into mine and asked myself the following questions:

  • What skills do I have?

    Jujitsu, Kickboxing and Self Defence

  • What am I good at?

    Teaching

  • What do I enjoy?

    Helping people acquire new skills

  • What does the world need?

    Free basic self-defence lessons

Self-defence for everyone

After I had asked myself these questions it became clear what I should do – I should design and deliver a free course in schools. After all, when you think of life saving skills two things come to mind: swimming and self-defence.

It is my belief that both should be accessible to everyone, no matter how much money they have and (in my mind) should be taught in school PE lessons as part of the curriculum.

With the help of the wonderful people at the Herts Sports Partnership, I was able to begin teaching in schools and the Shinrai Charity was born.

Thinking about techniques that would be easy to learn and not require too much strength, I designed a basic four session self-defence course which includes:

Basic punching and kicking techniques

Blocks and defensive moves

How to escape from grabs

Reaction training

Learning to use learnt skills to react to what is happening and not anticipate what is going to happen next.

Charity – Happy Programme, St. Albans

Over the summer holidays I’ve had the pleasure to be involved with the HAPpy Programme, based in St Albans. This fantastic initiative has been created to give children different types of classes and experiences (from drama to basketball) over the school holidays, giving children a place to be, a delicious lunch to enjoy and new friends to make.

Over three weeks I took the children (ages 6 – 14) through the free self-defence course and they were so overjoyed when they received their completion certificates at the end of it.

Self Defence is now even more so in the forefront of our endeavours.

We aim to ensure all our future activities support the Children’s and Young People’s plan 2021/26.

Be Safe – “Young people have the opportunity to be healthy and safe. Young people are given a safe place outside to meet up with friends.”

Be Included – “Young people’s voices are listened to and valued in the service they receive.”

Be Independent – “Increased opportunity for young people to develop the skills they need to be independent.”

Be Resilient – “Provide advice and information to help young people get the support they need as soon as they need it.”
